As COVID restrictions ramp down, it’s time to play catch-up on those home improvements you’ve been putting off. Getting stuff done around the house is a great way to use your time productively and make the post-pandemic transition go by a little more quickly. Plus, a few DIY upgrades can transform your home into a much more inviting space to spend time in, or these updates can appeal to buyers if you’re planning on selling your home. Here are some great projects to check off your to-do list.

 Prepare Your Home for Disasters

A global pandemic is an excellent reminder to reevaluate your family’s emergency response plan and better prepare your home for unexpected disasters. Build an emergency kit, draw up a home evacuation route, and consider making some upgrades to keep your family comfortable during a disaster. For example, installing a home backup generator is a great way to prepare for power outages, especially if you live in a region that’s prone to storms.

 Tackle Home Maintenance

Spend some time outside getting your home in shape. Start by inspecting the exterior of your home for damage. Use binoculars to assess your roof from a safe vantage point on the ground. Don’t forget to look for condensation on your windows, which could indicate a break in your weather stripping—this will let cold air into your home and increase the costs of heating your home over the winter. Turning your attention to inside your home, replace the HVAC filter, check for cracks in your foundation, and repair any leaking faucets in your bathrooms or kitchen.

 Make Low-Cost Kitchen Upgrades

Once you’re finished with those home maintenance responsibilities, you can get started on projects that will make your home more beautiful. Your kitchen is an easy room to enhance with a few DIY upgrades. For example, Kitchn recommends repainting your cabinets to make your kitchen appear bigger and brighter. While you’re at it, replace your faucet and cabinet hardware to bring your kitchen into the 21st century.

If you have the budget for a larger remodeling project, you could even install new kitchen flooring—laminate flooring is one of the easiest flooring materials to install since it snaps into place without requiring adhesives or nails. Another update that can improve the look and feel of your kitchen is adding some curtains, shades, or blinds on your windows.

Create an Inviting Outdoor Living Space

Whether you have a full backyard or a tiny front porch, maximizing the use of your outdoor space will enable you and your family to enjoy the fresh air and get a healthy dose of vitamin D every day, even in cooler weather. American Home Shield suggests creating a cozy outdoor space by starting with some comfortable seating—choose weather-resistant fabrics that will hold up against sun and rain. Next, incorporate some attractive lighting elements to add ambiance, such as string lights or solar lanterns.

If you need a professional’s touch to improve your outdoor space, find landscape design services in your area. Simply visit an online job platform and review potential candidates based on their rate, experience, area of expertise, and reviews from former customers.

The coronavirus and its aftermath has forced all of us to come up with new ways to spend our time. If you’re a homeowner, that ever-growing to-do list is a great place to start. Tackle those home maintenance tasks, make some simple upgrades, and get your home ready to weather any storms. Once you get started, you’ll never run out of things to fix or improve around your home
